When you travel to Southern California, it's always wise to keep a checklist of the top places to see and things to do. To better help you plan your next invigorating escape to this amazing destination, here are my picks for top five places and things to see and do when in the Sunshine State.

Hollywood Boulevard: Don't miss the Walk of Stars, where the most famous actors, actresses, film producers and directors have their very own star decorating this walkway. Other notable sites include the world famous Whiskey A Go Go - where Janis Joplin, Led Zeppelin and Jimi Hendrix performed - the Viper Room, and hundreds of stores and shops that line this amazing, historical street; a must-see when you travel to Southern California.

Pacific Coast Highway: Is a few hundred mile stretch of highway that is one of the most famous and historical highways in the United States. The views that you will see when driving along the Pacific Coast Highway are second-to-none. Stop off at any of the dozens of beaches along the way to lie in the white sand and watch the tide roll in.

San Diego Zoo: One of the largest and most amazing zoos in the entire world awaits you with more animals and exhibits than you will find almost anywhere else in the world. Make sure that you have a park map, sunscreen and some bottled water handy, as this park demands one or two days to really take it all in and see all of the sights.

Santa Monica Pier: This pier sits alongside Boston's and New York City's as one of the most famous piers in the entire country. The best time to visit it is at night, when the shops and the trademark Ferris wheel are all lit up brilliantly. One can easily spend hours of time walking from vendor to vendor, people watching, strolling along the beach, or visiting the many different attractions.

Sea World: One of the largest and most exclusive water parks in the world is the place to go if you want to catch one heck of show. Learn about exotic large fishes, and see some pretty fabulous shows. If you get lucky, you can even pet the bottlenose dolphins or offer them a tasty, fishy treat.

One of the advantages of large under seven theme parks in Southern California is that we can find big-time fun for all ages and interests. The group of seven parks include Sea World and Legoland in San Diego County, Disneyland, Disney's California Adventure and Knott's Berry Farm in Orange County, and Six Flags Magic Mountain and Universal Studios Hollywood in Los Angeles County. How many Did you know?

These parks are clearly not all equal in theirTarget audience, ambience and attractions. Unless you visit SoCal at least a couple of weeks, you probably do not have time to visit all the parks, so here is a brief discussion of their unique characteristics and differences.

We begin with the southern theme parks. Sea World is fun for everyone, but people with a special interest in animals and the marine environment is particularly love this park. There are activities and shows for youngChildren and for older children and adults. If neither you nor your children are in ocean life, this park is not at the top of the list.

Continue along the coast is Legoland. This amusement park is easy to find, it is designed for smaller children. There are some activities for older brothers and sisters, but it's for the kids. It contains a number of educational attractions, making learning fun.

Up in Orange County, we find the Dynamic Duo, Disneyland and Disney'sCalifornia Adventure. Disneyland is a must for anyone of any age to visit if you have never been (even if you were to Florida, you must visit the Grand Daddy of them all). The only area where other thrill rides in amusement parks shine brighter, Disneyland does not offer the rides can be found at Knott's and Six Flags.

Disney's California Adventure Park is the newer, directly opposite the entrance to the Magic Kingdom. It is entirely different in its feel, with a focus onbring the guest a taste of the many parts of California. The park is in the midst of a billion-dollar renovation, which will bring more charm to the place. It will put more emphasis on California, where Walt Disney and his brother Roy, when they came out the beginning of the 20th Century. Also, the Pixar characters taking over the place that is sure to enhance his charisma and fun quotient!

Knott's Berry Farm is the oldest of the parks, having literally grown from aBerries on the roadside and chicken dinner restaurant. Now it is the home of the Peanuts comic clans, including Snoopy, Charlie Brown, Lucy and the rest is also some very cool rides, it's better than Disneyland, if you are traveling, with roller coaster enthusiasts.

Until we go to Hollywood, one time at the Universal studios. This amusement park has a series of action rides, and the studio tour, of course, but by far not the height of the action, visit the Knott's and Six Flags. UniversalHollywood studios has an emphasis on shows, great shows that go by the way, but not quite so many attractions. It is close to provide access to many characters from Universal in connection with film and TV programs. You will find some of the Marvel Comics people there, like Spider Man This park is a little less wonderful for very young children, especially on a hot summer day.

Finally, we arrive at Six Flags Magic Mountain in Valencia. This place is for two things, thrill rides and renownedWarner Bros. Loony Tunes characters. You'll find Bugs Bunny, Daffy Duck, Yosemite Sam and their friends in different places around the city. So the park has covered small children very well. There are nearly 20 major thrill rides for older children and adults. Final suggestions: Disneyland for anyone of any age, unless thrill rides are your life, Legoland, Knott's and Six Flags for small children (including Sea World, if you are living creatures and the sea world love);Knott's, Universal Studios and Six Flags for older children and adults.
