Why crate training is important?
Crate training your dog can serve many important roles. Especially if trained properly, they provide your dog with a safe environment in your home to spend and relax. A kind of sanctuary or "private room" if you will. Second, by training this behavior is a simple, you have the flexibility to this learning (called generalization) to transfer to other situations (traveling in a car, go on vacation, etc. back) a few years Iacquired Chow mix, and he was full of behavior problems ... not least, tear, if the house left alone for more than a few minutes. I was able to successfully (and easily as I add) crate train him, and it eliminates almost all problem behavior.
A few helpful tips before you begin:
Of course you'll need a box. There are many different designs and materials to choose from. The most important thing is to to choose is the rightSize. It must be large enough for your dog to stand and be able to turn without too much difficulty.
Make yourself comfortable. You want in a pillow or blanket inside, you put your dog while inside is cozy.
Do not rush. The worst thing you can do when training any behavior to try and rush through the process. Learning is a continuous process, and links generally lead to unwanted side effects in the long term. Take your time and make the process fun.
Have many short trainingMeetings. The biggest mistake I do not see dog owners try to conduct train pulled in just a few sessions ago. You are doing much better, many short and positive studies as a marathon session that is likely to fail at some point. Repetition with a large reinforcement is the key, learn fast.
Step by step training tips:
First, pick out a few special treats to your dog. I'm not a big advocate of the use of food only as a reinforcement,But for crate training can be useful. Make sure the door of the box is open. Walk your dog near the front of the box and reinforce it (them a treatment) for the coming close to it. The idea here is the first introduction is making very positive. If your dog is already a negative history with a box, you need this several times before doing more.
Your next step will be to teach your dog to go inside. Usually the best way to do this, start to walk your dogagainst the box to keep their momentum as they follow you and point your finger in the chest. You should it with a pair of cue (such as "inside" or "box"). Although this will mean nothing to queue first, it will be after a series of successful trials. Sometimes it can be helpful to encourage your dog to go inside the crate by tossing a treat inside, as they approach. Every time you go your dog in the crate, they say "good dog" and strengthen them in the box. Thisis very important. You want all your amplification to occur INSIDE the box, not to leave for it. Continue to do so with a number of short sessions until your dog consistently go in the crate without hesitation.
Once your dog is comfortable in the crate, it is now time to start closing the door. Remember, you do not want a "trap" or "trick" your dog in the crate want them to turn inward and wait quietly while the door. Once the door is closed, saythey are "good dog" and give them their favorite treat WHILE the door is closed. You can open the door when your dog have increased, but that you not to exacerbate them to leave the box. You want to make sure that all your strengthening is for your dog in the crate and thus close the door.
If you consistently train your dog to go in the box and thereby closing the door, you are ready to start slowly increase the time your dog stays inside. While your dog is in the box, you want to be sure, at times increased, while they remain inside. Throughout this process, if any reinforcement is occurring as part of your dog to sit quietly in the crate with the door closed. They also want to be sure you are not to open the door and let out your dog when they moan or scratching at the door. If you do, you will teach them that scratching and whining, are what they should do if they want. This isjust because you more problems down the road, and it is easy to avoid.
You now know the most important steps to take, crate training your dog. This article is only meant to give you some basic tips to keep you and your dog up for success. Good luck.
